Decathlon Tire Lever / Lifter in the test: Convenient tire fitting with just one hand?

23 November 2023 by Andrew Waldera

Bicycle tire lever test: The Decathlon Tire Lever / Lifter promises convenient tire mounting with just one hand. The design of the lever is striking. The ends are each specifically designed for mounting or dismounting tires. Does the special design of the bicycle tire lever really allow tires to be put on and taken off with one hand? We want to know!

Decathlon Tire Lever/Lifter

Decathlon Tire Lever / Lifter: First impression

With a length of 163 millimeters, the Decathlon Tire Lever / Lifter made of polyamide is one of the longer bicycle tire levers in our test. The length is no coincidence: the lever is designed as a handle and must therefore also accommodate larger hands. A specially designed end is provided for putting tires on and taking them off. The printed label indicates which side is designed for each work. The thumb recesses are intended to ensure even more powerful pushing of the lever. The thumb recess also has another meaning: when removing a tire, it serves as a lever reinforcement.

The bicycle tire lever in the test

The tire lever is easy to grip and sits firmly in the hand. The area surrounding the fingers is not structured, but the thumb grooves ensure a secure hold. This applies to both the Install and Remove pages. The shovel for removing the tire is strongly curved and, in combination with the lever reinforcement, enables very efficient dismantling. Once pushed under the tire bead, the lever can be used to smoothly slide the tire off the rim. The install page also does its job well and reliably. However, with stiff, stubborn tires, both sides reach their limits and require help in the form of an additional tire lever.

A great principle that makes it very easy to put on and take off conventional tires. The only limits are heavy-fitting tires with stiff carcasses. A second lever is needed here.
