Safe battery rear light: Busch & Müller IXBACK Senso in the test

November 16, 2023 by the editorial team

Busch & Müller IXBACK Senso

Busch & Müller IXBACK Senso: As part of our list of the best battery-powered rear lights for racing bikes, this time we looked at the IXBACK Senso from the German manufacturer Busch-Müller - and this rear light has a few special features.

Right from the start, the special shape of the IXBACK Senso is noticeable, as it is rather square and the light cone is aligned horizontally. Most of the other taillights in our test field have a vertical arrangement of the LEDs. The so-called LineTec lens system turns just one LED into a bright strip of light.

Our test impression of the Busch & Müller IXBACK Senso

packaging and assembly

We see some room for improvement in the packaging made of plastic material, as Busch+Müller already uses more sustainable packaging made entirely of cardboard for other models. In addition, the scope of delivery includes many small parts that no longer fit well in the packaging after the first unpacking.

When it comes to assembly, the IXBACK Senso stands out in terms of dimensions because it can be mounted on the seat post in three different ways. As with most other battery-powered rear lights, the IXBACK Senso can be attached quickly and easily with a rubber ring. As a second option, the rear light can be fixed with the included cable ties. The third option is a little more complicated the first time it is installed, but since the rear light then remains permanently attached to the seat post and can be removed for charging, the installation only has to be carried out once. When mounted with the Klick-Fix metal clamp, the battery rear light is screwed to the bike in a theft-proof manner; The removable rear light can also be secured with a small screw.

Operation and battery life

The IXBACK Senso can be operated easily and very intuitively with the large, smooth-running button on the side of the lamp. By pressing the button for a little longer, the lamp can be switched on and off again. With a short press you can switch between the normal continuous light and the Senso mode - as the name of the rear light suggests. In the latter, the rear light is controlled by the integrated light/dark and motion sensors. It switches on automatically when the bike is moved at dusk or in the dark. If movement stops or it becomes light, the rear light stays on for four minutes. When you switch on Senso mode, the rear light also initially lights up for four minutes. An indicator LED right next to the button shows which mode is currently active: red for continuous light and green for Senso.

The indicator LED also shows the charge level of the battery; pay attention to the frequency of flashing. However, if the charge level falls below 20%, the LED flashes continuously and you should recharge it again using the included micro-USB cable. What is now helpful when charging is that you can remove the rear light from the holder without having to remove the holder on the seat post. When fully charged, the IXBACK Senso can be used at full brightness for around 15 hours, after which the brightness slowly decreases.

The rear light can be protected from simple theft with a small screw.

At 45,85 grams, the IXBACK Senso is in the middle weight range of our test series. The side visibility stands out very positively at 360 degrees and ensures a big increase in visibility. For a fair price of 39,90 euros you get a long-lasting and theft-proof rear light with Senso mode and a very long battery life - the only thing missing is a brake light function.
