Cycling: Rigoberto Uran won the 17th stage of the Vuelta a Espana. The Colombian was part of a 13-man breakaway group that fought for the stage win at the Monasterio de Tentudía. Leader Remco Evenepoel confidently defended his red jersey.
Uran wins ahead of Pacher and Herrada
After 162,3 kilometers from Aracena to the Monasterio de Tentudía, a breakaway was able to celebrate today's victory at the Vuelta a Espana. Rigoberto Urán (EF Education – EasyPost) was ahead of the French Quentin Pacher (Groupama – FDJ) and the Spaniard Jesus Herrada (Cofidis) prevail in a thrilling uphill sprint. The Colombian thus celebrates his first victory after a dry spell of over a year. Most recently, he won a section of the Tour de Suisse 2021.
Roglic has to give up the Vuelta
What was already hinted at yesterday became bitter certainty today. Primois Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) could not tackle the 17th stage of the Vuelta a Espana. The Slovenian fell in the final meters yesterday and suffered bleeding wounds on his arms and legs. This means that he cannot win the Tour of Spain for the fourth time in a row. Currently it looks as if the overall victory will be between Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) and Enric Mas Nicolau (Movistar) to be decided. The Belgian overall leader parried two attacks from his Spanish opponent on the final climb. In the end, both finished at the same time, a few seconds behind Joao almeida (UAE). Evenepoel continues to lead Mas by 2:01 minutes.
