Cycling: It's finally that time again: the Deutschland Tour starts tomorrow. In Weimar, the pros roll off the launch pad on Wednesday. From Thursday to Sunday, the top-ranked peloton then travels to Stuttgart via Meiningen, Marburg, Freiburg and Schiltach. We take a look at the participating teams, analyze the stage profiles and puzzle over possible favourites.
The stages: prologue & mountain arrival
Tomorrow it will start. With a 2,6 kilometer prologue in Weimar the starting signal for the 37th Germany Tour is fired. Since the reintroduction of this tour, it will take place for the first time on five instead of four days. After the fight against the clock, the peloton travels from Weimar Meiningen. Even if the stage profile was marked as hilly, the sprinters should get their chance here. Meiningen continues on Friday marburg The final quarter of the race is challenging, so a puncheur will likely come out on top here. There could be the next change of leadership at the top of the overall standings. And same thing could happen a day later when the pros in Freiburg start and at the end of a hard day the Schauinsland have to conquer. Here a real climber should cheer the day's victory. But the decision is not made until the last day. From Schiltach to Stuttgart leads again a wavy stage. The game of seconds for the podium is taken to the extreme here. The winner of the Germany Tour 2022 will be chosen on Sunday after 710,7 kilometers.

14 WorldTour teams & one national team
Even if the Deutschland Tour is not yet part of the WorldTour in 2022, the tour can look forward to such a top-class start list that some WorldTour races could become jealous. With Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) is a Tour and Giro overall winner at the start. teammate Filippo Gana (Ineos Grenadiers) is the current time trial world champion. Fabio Jacobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) is the reigning European Champion and has already won a stage at the Tour de France, as well as Caleb ewan (Lotto – Soudal), alexander kristoff (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert Matériaux), Nils Politt (Bora – hansgrohe), Fernando Gaviria (UAE) and at least ten other nominated drivers. In addition, the fans are allowed to Simon Geschke (German national team) who gave us so much joy in the mountain jersey at the Tour de France this summer. A total of 14 teams from the WorldTour are at the start, two ProTeams, three Continental teams and a German national team.

The favourites: Bardet, Bernal & Fuglsang
Who will win the Germany Tour 2022? A question could hardly be more difficult to answer. There are no clear favourites. The route planners around Fabian Wegmann did a great job. There is something for everyone. The prologue favors the strong time trialists. But the battle against the clock is being fought over a distance of less than three kilometres, so the gaps remain a matter of seconds. After that there will be a stage for the sprinters and a wavy section right after that. The red jersey could change shoulders any day. After the time trialists, sprinters and puncheurs, it is the turn of the climbers on the penultimate day. But since it gets hilly again on the way to Stuttgart, it could be a game of seconds down to the last meter. International stars, like Romain Bardet (Ag2r – Citroën), Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) and Jakob Fuglsang (Israel – Premier Tech) are sure to be hard to shake off. But the Germans could also get through Emmanuel Buchman (Bora – hansgrohe),Simon Geschke (German national team) or George Zimmerman (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert Matériaux) have a say in the overall victory.
