Cycling: Filippo Ganna lived up to his role as favorite at the start of the Deutschland Tour. The Italian time trial world champion won the prologue in Weimar ahead of Bauke Mollema and Nils Politt.

The 37th edition of the Deutschland Tour has started. And the world champion Filippo Gana (Ineos Grenadiers) secured the day's win and thus also the first red jersey. The Italian won the 2,6-kilometre prologue in Weimar with a lead of two and three seconds respectively over the Dutchman Build Mollema (Trek – Segafredo) and the German Nils Politt (Bora – hansgrohe). The Belgian Yves Lampaert (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) – who won the opening time trial of the Tour de France – finished fourth. Curious: The mountain jersey will be tomorrow Olav Kooij (Jumbo – Visma) carry. The Dutchman was the fastest in the meantime. After that, however, he fell, so that he is listed in the daily result on 119th and last place. Actually, 120 riders should have started the Germany Tour, but the German Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain - Victorious) gave a positive corona test and was therefore not allowed to participate.
Versatile Germany tour
Tomorrow the pros will start the first stage of the Deutschland Tour again at Goetheplatz in Weimar. The section leads over 171 kilometers to Meiningen. The convoy then travels via Marburg and Freiburg up to the Schauinsland. After the mountain finish, the final stage starts on Sunday in Schiltach. The Germany tour finally ends in Stuttgart.
