Cycling: Wout van Aert has won the fifth stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné. The Belgian won in the sprint of a decimated peloton after the escapees were caught just before the finish line.
Van Aert celebrates - rightly so this time
Next stage win at the Critérium du Dauphiné for wout van aert (Jumbo - Visma)! The 162,3-kilometre fifth stage took the pros from Thizy-les-Bourgs to Chaintré. There, as expected, the decision was made in the sprint. However, this end of the stage was not certain until the very end, as the four breakaways bravely defended themselves against the approaching peloton. The Austrian Sebastian Schoenberger (B&B Hotels – KTM), the Belgian Jan Bakelants (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert Matériaux), as well as the two French Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) and Fabien Doubey (TotalEnergies) could only be found in the last meters.
BikeExchange – Jayco gambles
After the day's breakaway formed, Team BikeExchange – Jayco took the lead in the peloton. With the full strength of their team, they kept the breakaway group at the desired maximum distance. However, when the last two mountain classifications went up, Ineos Grenadiers ignited the turbo. Prompt became a sprinter Dylan Groenewegen (BikeExchange – Jayco) distanced. The way was prepared for the duel ethan hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) vs wout van aert (Jumbo - Visma). But the calculation was made almost without the four brave escapees, who were only caught 100 meters from the finish line and finally overtaken. Jordy Meeus (Bora – hansgrohe) almost managed to sprint past his compatriot.
