The Mavic naming – Actually quite simple
Nowadays it can happen that you no longer know the product names and don't know exactly what the titles or numbers stand for. Here we have a brief overview for you, so that you can always find your way around the Mavic lineup (not just the Road Innovations 2022).
The main name
This indicates the area of application and the nature of the wheel or rim.
- cosmic = carbon
- Kysrium = aluminum
- Aksium = aluminum
- Allroad = Gravel use
- Ellipse = track/fixie insert
The suffix
The performance level is indicated by the suffix. The gradation from the basic model to the high-end/race variant is as follows: Base - S - SL - SLR - Ultimate
The number
The specified number reveals something about the rim height of the Mavic wheels if there is a model in several variants. The rim heights range from 30/32/40/45/65 millimeters.
An overview of the Mavic Road innovations for 2022
In general, Mavic was pursuing three main goals for the 2022 season. These would be: A comprehensive SLR lineup with the introduction of the Mavic Cosmic SLR 45 wheelset, the revision of the high-end performer Cosmic Ultimate as a disc variant, improved wheels in the entry-level segment with the Ksyrium 30 Disc and the Allroad 650B and last but not least an individual, colored design of the Wheels in the Cosmic, Ksyrium and Allroad categories.
Mavic Road novelties 2022: Cosmic SLR 45
The Mavic Cosmic SLR 45 wheelset is the new high-end all-rounder from the French manufacturer. With its lighter, 45 mm deep rims and the new UD² finish, this carbon wheelset is said to be the fastest, stiffest and lightest all-rounder for road bikes with disc brakes.
Mavic Cosmic SLR 45 in review: Thanks to high-quality all-rounders at the usual strength?!
Test: The Mavic Cosmic SLR 45 wheelset is the French manufacturer's new high-end all-rounder. With its lighter, 45 mm deep rims and the new UD² finish, this carbon wheelset is said to be the fastest, stiffest and lightest all-rounder for road bikes with disc brakes. We wanted to find out whether Mavic can pick up on the old days and have the supposed all-rounder […]
The UST tubeless set-up eliminates the need for a tube, which means less friction and more air volume, providing a smoother ride and also promoting rollability. Because the subject of speed also plays an important role with the Cosmic SLR 45: With its rim height of 45 mm, the all-rounder has the perfect height for aerodynamic performance at a relatively low weight. In addition, the patented elliptical Mavic spokes save another 5 watts according to the manufacturer. Time to step on the gas!
The rear wheel hub of the SLR 45 is available for either Shimano HG or Sram XD-R cassettes, and can be converted to Campagnolo with an optional freewheel body. A 12×100 mm thru axle will fit at the front and a 12×142 mm thru axle at the rear. Appropriate adapters are supplied for converting to quick releases.
Mavic Road Innovations 2022: Cosmic Ultimate UST Disc
At just 1225 grams, the Cosmic Ultimate UST Disc provides the ultimate balance of lightweight, top stiffness and aerodynamics. In addition, the new Cosmic Ultimate benefits from the proven UST tubeless setup, thanks to which you no longer need a tube, which means less friction and more air volume. This results in a smoother handling and better rolling characteristics. Another special feature is that the bottom of the rim is no longer drilled through for the assembly of the spokes, which means that rim tape is not required to make the rim airtight.
The heart of the Mavic Cosmic Ultimate is the rim made of 100% carbon with NACA aero rim professional and 45 millimeters high and 27 millimeters wide. The complex fiber layup optimizes the stiffness/weight ratio and is complemented by the UD² finish. With 20 ultra-slim aero spokes and extra high, narrow hub flanges made of carbon, the wheel also offers clear advantages in terms of aerodynamics. With the R2R technology, two spokes are replaced by a single spoke, which also does not have to be firmly anchored to the hub, which also increases the rigidity of the wheel.
Industrial bearings with automatic bearing preload are used in the carbon hub bodies. On the rear wheel, the Instant Drive 360 freewheel with 40 engagement points ensures direct power transmission and minimal friction losses. The hubs are thru-axle compatible (front 12×100 mm, rear 12×142 mm) and center-lock brake discs.

Mavic Road News 2022: Ksyrium 30 Disc
In contrast to the high-performer Ultimate, the new Ksyrium 30 Disc impeller is more for beginners who want to approach racing performance. The wheel has been redesigned from the ground up and not only features the UST Road Tubeless system, but also a 30 mm high rim profile, which has been optimized for aerodynamic performance. Aero spokes are also added here, which are laced into the high-quality Infinity hubs. Optimally balanced spoke tension is a guarantee for perfect rigidity and maximum durability. The aluminum rims also benefit from Mavic's experience in light, yet stable designs.
