Cycling: Michael Storer won the seventh stage of the Vuelta a Espana as a soloist. The Australian left all his companions on the final climb. Austria's Felix Großschartner missed the red jersey by just 8 seconds.
Storer crowns strong team effort
Even today, the stage win at the Vuelta a Espana should go to the escapees. The 152-kilometer section from Gandía to Balcón de Alicante decided Michael Storer (DSM) for itself. The Australian pulled away from his last competitors on the final climb and drove towards the day's success as a soloist. The 24-year-old is thus celebrating the greatest success of his young career. He owes the triumph not only to his legs but also to his team. In the large escape group he had 4 helpers at his side. The leading group of the day broke away from the main field relatively late. Among the 29 men were 5 drivers from DSM. Michael Storer (DSM), Pavel Shivakov (Ineos Grenadiers) and Lawson Craddock (EF – Nippo) quickly gained a considerable lead. Only the last climbers were able to reestablish contact with the top Charles Verona (Movistar) and Andrew Kron (Lotto – Soudal).
Grossschartner narrowly misses red
Was no longer able to fully intervene in the fight for the stage win Felix Grossschartner (Bora – hansgrohe). The Austrian was also part of the 29-man breakaway group, but missed the decisive attack – as did the red jersey. He finished seventh in the stage and is now second in the overall standings, just 8 seconds behind the leader Primois Roglic (Jumbo - Visma). The Slovenian crossed the finish line together with his opponents. There shouldn't be any attacks among the favorites despite the steep final climb.
Valverde & Carthy are out
The seventh stage of the Vuelta a Espana should be bitter for Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) ends. The Spaniard fell after an attack in the last third of the race and had to retire. He was lucky in his misfortune, because exactly at the point where he lost control of his bike, there was no crash barrier and the slope was steep. Tears flowed anyway, because it was probably the last tour of Spain by the old master. Also had to give up Hugh Carthy (EF – Nippo), who lost time yesterday due to a wind crest and was left behind in the first climb today.
