Product news: With the "Pedal to Zero" initiative, PEARL iZUMi is laying another building block in the direction of a positive climate balance. Each garment in the new BikeStyle spring collection will include a statistic showing the distance traveled by bike instead of by car to offset the garment's carbon footprint in manufacturing and transport.
By 2025, the PEARL iZUMi brand wants to achieve a positive climate balance; by 2022, 90% of the products should be made from sustainable materials. Today, according to the company, more than 40% of the product line is made from recycled, renewable and organic fibers. PEARL iZUMi is now laying another building block to achieve the set goal with "Pedal to Zero". The initiative aims to motivate people to choose the bicycle as an alternative means of transport. Each piece of clothing in the new BikeStyle spring collection 2022 contains a statistic for this. It is the distance traveled by bike instead of by car to offset the garment's carbon footprint, both in manufacturing and in transit.
PEARL iZUMi uses the Higg Index, a sustainability concept of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC). With the help of the Higg Index, the ecological and social impact of business processes can be evaluated. The new Higg Product Module 1.0 also makes it possible to determine the amount of carbon dioxide that is produced during the manufacture of a garment. Based on the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) estimate, it can be calculated how many kilometers it would take to bike, which would normally be covered by car, to achieve virtually zero carbon emissions from each garment. The basis for the calculations is the fuel consumption of a car in the USA, which emits around 250 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
As a clear example, PEARL iZUMi gives the Rove shorts from the new BikeStyle collection. The production and transport of this product cause the equivalent of 5,9 kg of CO2. For errands or the way to work, almost 25 kilometers have to be covered by bike instead of by car and the emissions of the shorts are already balanced - according to the manufacturer. In any case, the "Pedal to Zero" initiative is a reminder that every product you buy has an impact on the environment - and how you can at least do something to counteract this, even if only on a small scale.
