Cycling: Giacomo Nizzolo finally did it! After 12 second places at the Giro d'Italia, he can finally celebrate a stage win. In the bunch sprint, Italy's Edoardo Affini, who almost managed to outrun the sprinters in the last kilometer, left behind.
Nizzolo sprints to happiness
Finally! James Nizzolo (Qhubeka – Assos) has a stage win at the Giro d'Italia. After countless attempts and a total of 12 second places, he managed the really big coup today. In the mass sprint in Verona, he made the right decision at lightning speed Edward Affini (Jumbo – Visma) had escaped the sprinters. The Italian literally sucked himself up to his compatriot, used the slipstream and was the first to cross the finish line. Third place goes Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe) before Davide Cimolai (Israel Start-Up Nation) and Fernando Gaviria (UAE). Of course, there were no changes in the overall standings on this consistently flat stage.
Breakaway trio without a chance
Even before the start of the race, hardly anyone doubted a mass sprint. The 198-kilometer stage from Ravenna to Verona was as flat as a plate, making it as easy as possible for the sprinter teams to follow up. Still, a trio made up of wildcard teams made early escapes. The Swiss Simon Pellaud (Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec) was together with the Italians Samuel Rivi (EOLO – Comet) and Umberto Marengo (Bardiani – CSF – Faizanè) on the way. Although they managed to gain a lead of several minutes, they never really had a chance to win the stage. The peloton let the trio starve on the outstretched arm and caught it again about 6,5 kilometers from the finish.

Gran movement of Affini. Gaviria volvió a desesperarse, sin confiar en sus lanzadores. Nizzolo lo marcó muy bien. pic.twitter.com/MVmQd8jbHs
