Cycling: The Italians can cheer. At the start of the 104th Giro d'Italia, fans can celebrate an Italian double victory. World champion Filippo Ganna lived up to his role as favorite and won the 8,6-kilometer time trial in Turin ahead of his compatriot Edoardo Affini.
Ganna dominates the start in Turin
The 104th Giro d'Italia has started. At 14:00 rolled in person from Filippo Tagliani (Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec) the first pro off the launch pad. In Turin, 8,6 kilometers had to be covered on the time trial bike. So the start was a clear affair for the specialists, so that the time trial world champion did not come as a surprise as the winner. Filippo Gana (Ineos Grenadiers) replaced his compatriot who had been leading up to that point Edward Affini (Jumbo – Visma) and ended up winning the battle against the clock by a whopping 10 seconds. At this distance they are worlds! The strong Norwegian completes the podium Tobias Foss (Jumbo - Visma). The German also presented himself strongly Maximilian Walscheid (Qhubeka – Assos) and the Austrian Matthias Brandle (Israel Start Up Nation). They take 8th and 9th place in the final.
Almeida, Evenepoel & Vlasov strongest ranking riders
Although the classification riders weren't quite able to take part in the fight for the day's victory today, the start was of course enormously important for them too. In the end, the Portuguese in particular were able to Joao almeida (Deceuninck – Quick-Step), the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) and the Russian Aleksandr Vlasov (Astana – Premier Tech) convince. Unfortunately, the German lost significantly more time Emmanuel Buchman (Bora – hansgrohe) a. He didn't get off to a good start in the Giro d'Italia and lost a whopping 55 seconds to the day's winner.
