Stella Livorno Premium MDS: Sporty step-through bike with a great drive

18 October 2020 by Michael Faiss

Stella Livorno MDB

Product News / E-Bikes: The Stella Livorno Premium MDB is a versatile and sporty step-through bike with a Bosch Performance Line drive and fully-fledged, well thought-out equipment for leisure and everyday use.

Stella Bikes from the Netherlands was founded in 2010 and since then has been selling its bikes directly to customers: This is mainly done via selected test centers or even on their own doorstep. More about the concept behind Stella Bikes:

Stella from the Netherlands has aimed to offer motorized bikes at an affordable price since its early days, deliberately bucking the trend. An important building block - in addition to the cost-efficient assembly of the bikes themselves - is the sales concept: there are no dealers, instead Stella sells the bikes directly to its customers. In contrast to classic direct mailers, however, the sale does not take place online - either you make your way to one of the increasingly numerous test centers or take advantage of the free offer to test at home; Mobile sales and service teams are available for this.

This bold concept paid off: Stella now employs over 500 people and operates a total of almost 50 test centers - 42 of them in the Netherlands, five in Belgium and now two in Germany. In addition, there are over 80 mobile teams that take care of service and sales at the customer's site.

Stella Livorno MDB: Strong overall package for everyday use and leisure

Step-throughs are generally not necessarily the sportiest reputation; However, e-bikes like the Stella Livorno Premium MDB show that the low step-through can be combined with a healthy dose of sportiness without sacrificing comfort too much. Thanks to the elegantly integrated Bosch Performance Line motor, the top speed of 25 km/h can be reached quickly - even if the climb is a bit steep. This is ensured by the maximum torque of 65 Nm, which is hardly audible in the case of the drive presented last year.

The motor disappears almost completely behind the chain ring.
Hard to believe that the battery is only semi-integrated - optically no disadvantage compared to fully integrated solutions.
The Bosch Performance Line motor has plenty of power, but always remains pleasantly quiet.

So that you can enjoy this support for as long as possible, Stella has installed a 500 Wh battery that is semi-integrated on or in the down tube. Semi-integrated means: Instead of relying on a special, fully integrated Powertube battery that disappears completely in the down tube, a traditional, external battery is sunk into a corresponding recess. Visually, this is hardly less elegant, but the advantages of handling, such as easier removal for charging, cannot be denied.

With its 500 Wh capacity, the battery won't run out even on a day trip.

The e-bike from Stella, which is available in a total of three frame sizes, is also equipped with a 10-speed Shimano Deore derailleur system. The shifting behavior is crisper, sportier and the range is larger than with a hub gear, such as many other e-step-through bikes. Anyone who appreciates these advantages will certainly also accept that the maintenance effort for the derailleur gears will be somewhat higher. The other equipment is solid and appropriate for the price of 3.349 euros; the hydraulic disc brakes from the Shimano Alivio series are easy to control and grip tight when needed. Components such as the Suntour NEX suspension fork and the suspension seat post ensure a high level of comfort, even when the ground gets a little worse. The wide 50 mm Big Apple tires from Schwalbe also go well with this.

The derailleur gears match the overall quite sporty touch of the Stella Livorno MDB.
The suspension fork noticeably absorbs bumps, but can only be adjusted to the rider's weight to a limited extent.
The Schwalbe Big Apple tires are pleasantly wide at 50 mm and ensure a lot of comfort.

The Stella Livorno Premium MDB is well prepared for everyday use, above all because of its flawless full equipment: luggage rack, mudguards, lighting and also a frame lock are included. We were particularly impressed by the lighting system: the main headlight at the front is integrated in the fender, the logo on the head tube further improves visibility with its integrated LED.

Not only do the cables disappear in the emblem on the head tube, but thanks to the integrated LED, it also shines as an additional headlight.
