Cycling: He was already second and third in this Tour de France. Now he finally has his stage win. The Swiss Marc Hirschi earned the triumph on the twelfth stage with an impressive performance.
Two Germans in the breakaway group
Jens Voigt won his first stage of the Tour de France 19 years ago. At that time, the German, who now comments on the races at Eurosport, was of course successful as a breakaway – in Sarran. And when we arrived in Sarran today, the chances of a breakaway were good. After the start in Chauvigny, a whopping 218,0 undulating kilometers had to be completed. Attacks rained down immediately after the start. Numerous pros wanted to be part of the breakaway today. A German-Spanish quartet consisting of Nils Politt (Israel Start Up Nation), Max Walscheid (NTT), Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) and Imanol Erviti (Movistar). Behind tried Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck – Quick Step) with Mathieu Burgaudeau (Total Direct Energy) on the rear wheel to close the gap. While the Danish champion drove like a locomotive in the wind, the Frenchman was visibly happy to be able to keep up. After a long struggle, the union succeeded.
Bora – hansgrohe & Sunweb with an aggressive driving style
After Bora - hansgrohe failed to place a man of his own in today's escape group, the German racing team followed the sextet. So the lead never grew to more than 3 minutes. Lost in the intermediate sprint Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe) but again the Quick-Step-Duo Sam Bennett and Michael Morkov. The escapees were caught around 50 kilometers from the finish line. There were numerous attacks up the Côte de la Croix du Pey, causing the peloton to split into several groups. At the very front, the new leading group was again made up of 6 riders, 3 in Sunweb jerseys. Next to Marc Hirschi, Tiesj Benoot and Soren Kragh Andersen sassen Maximilian schachmann (Bora – hansgrohe), Marc Soler (Movistar) and Quentin Pacher (B&B Hotels – Vital Concept) in the Sunweb Express.
Marc Hirschi impresses again
The 3,8-kilometre climb Suc au May was the first with 25,5 kilometers to go Marc Hirschi (Sunweb) crossed. Meanwhile sat behind Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) his attack. In between fought Maximilian schachmann and Marc Soler about the connection. But the Swiss was able to keep his lead and even extend it on the downhill. With 10 kilometers to go, Julian Alaphilippe's group caught up with the Schachmann/Soler duo and was a little less than a minute behind the leader. The peloton was already two minutes behind and could no longer intervene in the fight for the stage win.
"The Beginning of a Legend"
Nachdem Marc Hirschi in this year's Tour de France - his first ever - was already second and third in a stage, he was finally able to reward himself for his strong performance today. Although there were repeated attacks behind him, no one could deny him the day's victory. The 22-year-old not only impressed fans from Switzerland, but from all over the world. Also Eurosport commentator Jens Voigt - winner in Sarran 19 years ago - seems to have become a big Hirschi fan. The ex-pro spoke of "Beginning of a Legend", which we viewers can admire in the person of Marc Hirschi.
