The 10 best entry-level MTBs of 2021
Marlin Trek
The Marlin from US manufacturer Trek not only inherits the look of the premium hardtails from the same company, the sporty geometry is also reminiscent of the World Cup-tested models in the range. The aluminum frame, for example, scores with internally routed cables, while at the same time you have a total of seven frame sizes to choose from. Thanks to the many mounting points, the cheaper models are very well suited as off-road everyday bikes and with the Marlin 7, Trek also has an attractively priced bike for a sporty start in its range.
Prices: 499 – 749 euros
Giant XtC SLR
With the XtC SLR, the proven high-end hardtail from Giant now also has an affordable aluminum version. On the one hand, of course, it inherits the racing genes of its carbon counterpart, but on the other hand it can also score points with its high variability: Not only can tires with a width of up to 2,4 inches be mounted in the rear triangle, the frame is also already designed for the installation of one prepared for a retractable seat post. This is how the racing file turns into a trail robber in a flash.
Price: 1.099 euros – 1.399 euros
Bull's Copperhead 1
Copperhead: Hardly any other name in the bicycle world stands so clearly for an attractive price/performance ratio. In 2021, the Copperhead 1 is the entry into the iconic model series from Bulls. Despite its sporty genes, it is probably more suitable for everyday use than almost any other bike in this category. In addition to numerous eyelets on the frame, the MonkeyLink interfaces are primarily responsible for this, to which a lighting system can be attached in a flash with a magnet.
Price: € 799
GT Avalanche
The Avalanche from GT stands for more than 25 years of MTB history and is still a hot tip for off-road bikers in 2021. The new frame can handle up to 120 mm of travel at the front and cuts a fine figure even on demanding terrain thanks to its modern geometry. With five frame and two wheel sizes, everyone should be able to find a suitable model. In particular, the equipment variants Elite and Expert offer a successful overall package for a small budget.
Prices: 599 euros – 1.049 euros
Merida Big Trail
The Merida Big.Trail really deserves the nomination primarily because of its enormous versatility. With a sporty geometry, 29er wheels and up to 140 mm of spring travel at the front, it outperforms many a fully off-road bike. Thanks to numerous mounting points, including for mudguards or luggage racks, it also cuts a fine figure in everyday life or even on the next bikepacking adventure.
Prices: 849 euros – 1.599 euros
Orbea MX
With their MX, the Basques from Orbea show that they can not only build excellent high-end bikes, but also have exciting models in their range for bargain hunters. The Spaniards' racing genes come through in the geometry of the hardtail, with which the MX shows its strengths, especially in fast passages on moderate terrain. However, mounting points for a luggage rack show that the designers have also thought of everyday bikers.
Price: 589 euros – 779 euros
Ghost Nirvana Tour
As one of the first bikes in Ghost's portfolio, the Nirvana Tour relies on the new SuperFit geometry concept. Depending on the size, not only the frame dimensions differ, but also the handlebar width, stem and crank length, even the wheel size and fork travel are adjusted. So you want to convey an identical driving experience across all sizes. This is unique, especially in the entry-level segment, and justifies a nomination in addition to the solid equipment and the modern overall concept.
Prices: 849 euros – 1.799 euros
Radon ZR team
If you are looking for maximum component yield for your money, you will find what you are looking for with the direct seller Radon with the ZR Team series. Based on a solid aluminum frame, you can get high-quality add-on parts here for less than 700 euros. Thanks to the wheel size growing with the frame, an optimal fit is also ensured. In view of this overall package, smaller details such as externally running cables can always be gotten over.
Price: 699 euros – 999 euros
Grand Canyon Canyon
Simply consistent, consistently simple: With the high-quality aluminum entry-level Grand Canyon, the Kobelnz-based direct seller does without a front derailleur on all models. In this segment in particular, the bikes benefit enormously from the intuitive shifting behavior and the wide range of modern 1x drives. Starting with the Grand Canyon 7, there is also 20 mm more travel at the front and a retractable seat post in all models - perfect for sporty trail use.
Prices: 799 euros – 1.799 euros
Cube analogue
For almost 700 euros, Cube puts together a very attractive overall package with its analog. In addition to the amazingly light aluminum frame with internally routed cables, we particularly like the 12-speed gears from Sram. The dimensions of the analog promise convincing all-round properties, which are also underlined by the fact that a side stand can easily be retrofitted to the rear triangle.
