On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Estonian embassy in Germany, the President of the Republic of Estonia, Kersti Kaljulaid, paid a visit to Berlin on Monday. This was the first visit by a head of state to Germany since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated restrictions. The Estonian President also used her stay in Berlin to visit the Berlin showroom of the Estonian e-bike company Ampler Bikes. Like the entire bicycle industry, the start-up founded in 2016 emerged as the winner of the pandemic.

In the first 5 months of 2020, the young company recorded an 88% increase in sales compared to the previous year. Ampler Bikes currently employs over 64 people who work between the two offices in Berlin and Tallinn. During her visit, Kersti Kaljulaid emphasized the importance of alternative urban, sustainable mobility. The Estonian President did not miss the opportunity to pedal together with Ardo Kaurit, the CEO and co-founder of Ampler Bikes, as part of a bike tour. Afterwards, Kersti Kaljulaid met the German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to whom she presented an Ampler Pedelec as an official gift.

Kersti Kaljulaid, Frank Walter Steinmeier

“I think bikes have the power to change the world and save our planet, but also save us as healthy people. For me, being outside, sitting on a bike is a special feeling and I am so happy that Ampler is making this feeling possible for more people.” – Kersti Kaljulaid, President of the Republic of Estonia
