First Ride - Specialized S-Works Power Mirror: Seating comfort from the 3D printer

June 2, 2020 by Florian Nowak

First Ride/Product News: With Retül, the world's largest database for cyclist fits, Specialized has not only made cycling more comfortable with its Body Geometry Fit over the past 20 years, but also made it significantly more efficient and pleasant. This is also the case with his latest achievement from the 3D printer, the Specialized S-Works Power Mirror saddle. We tested the saddle in the frame for you before the launch.

The Specialized S-Works Power Mirror is the result of the latest material science based on a large amount of data in the Specialized system. Since the saddle has always been one of the most hotly debated topics, developing the best possible combination of performance and comfort was at the top of the list. Instead of foam, Mirror technology uses a liquid polymer 3D printing process to create a unique honeycomb structure that is said to provide excellent sit bone support and superior comfort. This process allows the density of the material to be continuously shaped in a way that would not be possible with foam. The result is patent-pending technology that forms a matrix of 14.000 struts and 7.799 nodes. This matrix can be individually tailored to the needs and anatomy. This technology ensures that the sensitive arteries are always supplied with enough blood flow and the pressure on the soft tissue is reduced to be able to spend a comfortable day in the saddle.

The combination of extremely light Mirror upper material, flexibly coordinated FACT carbon shell and the very light fastening rails results in the S-Works Power Mirror saddle, which should enable top performance for every driver. In addition, the saddle has all the well-known Body Geometry design features, so you can count on superior and lasting comfort of a unique seating position.

Specialized S-Works Power Mirror - First Ride

We also tested the Specialized S-Works Power Mirror before the official launch. In order to demand everything from this supposedly powerful and comfortable saddle, we decided to do the test on a gravel bike, as the vibrations and impacts are likely to be even stronger here than on smooth asphalt.

At the beginning, the saddle seems very soft, which of course should guarantee good cushioning on the one hand and should have a particularly positive effect on the soft tissue. However, we had the feeling that we were not really able to put all the pressure on the pedal. After a while, however, we realized that the saddle was taking on the shape of our sit bones more and more and that we had a good base where it was needed. Nevertheless, unpleasant pressure points were avoided and there were no numbness. Especially off-road, the Specialized S-Works Power Mirror offered a small kind of suspension, as it could minimally absorb impacts and thus gave us a lot of relief in the lower back area and on the buttocks. A great saddle that definitely has its raison d'être, but for our taste it fits better off-road than on the road. But when it comes to the saddle, as is so often the case, individual preferences and taste are what counts. For riders who have always struggled with seating problems and numbness, the Specialized Power Mirror is definitely worth considering.

The Specialized S-Works Power Mirror saddle is available for 399,90 euros.
