Advent calendar / raffle: With the Magura eSTOP brakes, the Swabians are launching special brakes for e-bikes and e-MTBs for the 2020 season. With proven technology and discs up to 220mm in size, the aim is to further improve the already very good Magura stoppers in terms of fading resistance and braking power.
The e-bike boom of recent years has changed the bicycle market. This not only applies to the bikes themselves, but also to the components with the special requirements of motorized bicycles. A few years ago, special e-bike components were little more than clever marketing, but in the last two model years many products have appeared on the market that have also been technically designed for use on e-MTBs.
With the eSTOP product series, Magura announced a few months ago disc brakes that have been specially optimized for e-bikes and e-MTBs. That certainly causes quite a stir - after all, the Swabian brakes have been an absolute bank when it comes to powerful stoppers on e-bikes. Is there really still room for improvement?
The fact that the eSTOP brake itself (either MT4 2-piston or MT5 4-piston) is largely based on the well-known MT brake systems shows that Magura is also convinced of its own products - also on the e-bike. The bottom line, however, is that the overall system makes the big difference - and a brake also includes brake discs and the corresponding pads. This is exactly where Magura started and equipped its previous top brakes with eBike-optimized parts: special brake discs and pads.
Magura MDR-C and MDR-P brake discs
MDR-C brake disc
The new MDR-C brake disc is visually and technically similar to the well-known Magura discs and is the attractively priced all-rounder for e-bikes. However, there is an additional reinforcement above the 6-hole mount. The brake disc twists less, vibrations are minimized and the additional material also improves heat resistance.
MDR-C 180mm: 162g – 30 euros
MDR C 203mm: 222g – 30 euros
MDR-P brake disc
Now it's getting exciting: The new MDR-P brake disc is the highlight of the eSTOP range - with a diameter of up to 220mm, Magura is not only advancing into new size realms, but is also launching a two-piece brake disc on the market for the first time. The gearing between the outer and inner ring (Dovetail Interlink Technology) is designed in such a way that the heated outer ring can expand and at the same time is supported on the inner ring. Compared to classic floating disc constructions, the torque during the braking process is thus transmitted over the entire surface and not just at certain points via the rivets.
MDR-P 203mm: 216g – 55 euros
MDR-P 220mm: 241g – 55 euros
Magura Sport brake pads
The sport brake pads, which join the well-known comfort, performance (and race) variants, are also part of the eSTOP philosophy. Like all other Magura rubbers, it is an organic mixture that falls somewhere between comfort and performance in terms of performance and durability. A special feature is the particularly short braking time.
