Product news / e-bike: ZEG presented the new models for 2020 at the Bike Show in Cologne last weekend. With Blubrake, a new type of ABS system is used on four e-bikes from Bulls.
ABS on e-bikes - this is certainly not a new topic. It's been a little over two years since Bosch was the first manufacturer to present such a system. The system has not really caught on - although the function over all doubt is beyond doubt. There are various reasons for the hesitant acceptance on the bicycle market: Too heavy, too expensive, too clumsy, so it is often said. With the Italian manufacturer Blubrake, another company is now daring to tackle the topic of e-bike ABS, wants to stand up to Bosch and is therefore aggressively tackling the biggest point of criticism of the previous ABS: the Blubrake anti-lock braking system can be installed invisibly in the frame.

On paper, the functionality is similar to that of the Bosch system, but it is limited to the front wheel only. One sensor monitors the movement of the wheel, another “taps” the motor and its sensors to read speed, acceleration and other values. An algorithm connects these values, evaluates them and decides when the ABS will intervene. Intervention means specifically: The Blubrake ABS reduces the braking power to prevent the front wheel from locking up. Another component reduces the oil pressure in the braking system. This also prevents the bike and rider from overturning if you grab the brake lever too boldly.
Sounds very good in theory, the Blubrake ABS, but we can't make any statements about the practice yet - we hope to be able to do that soon. There should be an opportunity, because as announced at the ZEG Bike Show in Cologne, four Bulls e-bikes will be equipped with the system from the Italian manufacturer for the 2020 model year. In addition to the two all-rounders or SUV bikes Iconic Evo TR3 ABS and Adventure Evo AM TransAlp ABS, Bulls also relies on the braking system for two genuine E-MTBs, the Copperhead Evo AM 3 ABS and the Aminga Eva TR3 ABS.

We are very excited about the further development and look forward to a first test of the Blubrake ABS system.
