Cycling: Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe) successfully defended his yellow jersey on the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse. But the three-time world champion was unable to win another stage today. He was again at a disadvantage in the fight against Elia Viviani (Deceuninck - Quick-Step).
Viviani even defeats Sagan uphill
Elia Viviani (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) won the 177,0 kilometer long fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse from Münchenstein to Einsiedeln. The Italian champion thus managed to win the second stage of this year's Tour of Switzerland. Again he let the Slovak champion Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe) behind. Elia Viviani was prepared for the sprint in an exemplary manner. Shortly before the last left turn, he took the lead and pulled through to the finish line. Even this time, although things went uphill in the end. And the kilometers before that section wasn't easy either. A 13,5 kilometer climb didn't cause any problems for the sprinters. After the 3,7 percent steep mountain, there were still around 34,0 kilometers to go. From there, the last 500 meters led slightly uphill again.
Küng unlucky in the breakaway group
Four riders initially set off on today's fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse. Bert Jan Lindemann (Jumbo – Visma) said goodbye relatively early, leaving a trio. Matej Mohoric (Bahrain – Merida), Fabien Grellier (Total – Direct Energie) and the Swiss Stefan Kung (Groupama – FDJ) harmonized splendidly, but were never given a really big lead by the peloton. This was certainly also due to the fact that Stefan Küng was sixth in the overall standings, only 25 seconds behind. However, after the first and penultimate mountain prize, Matej Mohoric found the pace a bit too slow. The Slovenian left his companions and from there fought alone against the ever closer main field. 13 kilometers from the finish it finally happened to him too.
