Cycling: In addition to many mountain and classification riders, there are also some sprinters at the start of the Giro d'Italia 2020. We look to the fastest men who will sprint for stage wins on flat stages and battle for the Maglia Ciclamino.
Peter Sagan: Green? Violet!
For the first time in his career Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe) the Tour of Italy tackle. After he at the Tour de France missed the points jersey, he could be aiming for it at the Giro d'Italia. Some stages are made for him. If it gets a bit wavy, the classic sprinters are distanced and the Slovakian can score.
That's how we know him from before: Peter Sagan celebrates in the green jersey at the Tour de France. Now he wants to shine at the Giro d'Italia after a mixed tour.
Michael Matthews: With a lot of anger to Italy
Was very dissatisfied Michael Matthews (Sunweb) with his team's Tour nomination. His name was not to be found there. They promptly agreed on a separation at the end of the season. But at the Giro d'Italia you will still drive for the Australian. And rightly so, because some stages suit him just like Peter Sagan. There he will have to duel with the Slovak and will definitely have a chance or two of winning a stage. Michael Matthews is therefore automatically considered to be one of the favorites for the points classification.
Michael Matthews could shape the Giro d'Italia 2020. Some stages suit him just like Peter Sagan.
Arnaud Démare: Faster than ever
Since his team bet everything on Thibaut Pinot at the Tour de France, Arnaud Demare (Groupama – FDJ) not nominated. But he can now complete the Giro d'Italia. Among other things, the Frenchman won Milan – Turin and the Tour de Wallonie this year. He seemed faster than ever before. If there is now a flat sprint in Italy, he is probably the top favorite for the day's victory.
In the 2020 season, Arnaud Démare was able to convince several times. How many stages does he win in Giro d'Italia 2020?
Fernando Gaviria: Well recovered from the coronavirus
As one of the first professional cyclists Fernando Gaviria (UAE) infected with the coronavirus in March. After that, the Colombian recovered well. He won stages at the Vuelta a Burgos, the Tour du Limousin and the Giro della Toscana. Estimating slightly behind Arnaud Démare, Fernando Gaviria is arguably one of the fastest sprinters in a flat sprint.
Fernando Gaviria, who was still ill with the corona virus in March, has now fully recovered.
Elia Viviani: Is he rehabilitating at the Giro?
Didn't get a good report card Elia Viviani (Cofidis) for his achievements in this year's Tour de France. Started as one of the top sprinters in the tour, he didn't win a single stage. Only a fourth, a fifth and a sixth place jumped out. This is clearly not enough for a driver of the Viviani class. He is now to be rehabilitated at the Giro d'Italia. But how strong is he anyway? After his team change from Deceuninck – Quick-Step to Cofidis he is missing a working train. It is questionable whether everything will get better at the Giro d'Italia ...
The ex-European champion hasn't really been able to convince after his team change to Cofidis.
Alvaro Hodeg: It's his first Grand Tour
A rider from the Deceuninck – Quick-Step team simply has to be included in the list of sprinters. Alvaro Hodeg fulfills this task in this case – and rightly so. The Colombian can already look back on 15 professional victories. Most recently, he won the Münsterland Giro about a year ago. The only 24-year-old has never been allowed to cheer on a Grand Tour – but he has never ridden one either. With the usual strong team at his side, he is automatically one of the fastest men in the field. A stage win should therefore at least be possible for him in Italy.
At the Münsterland Giro last year, Alvaro Hodeg beat Pascal Ackermann in the sprint.
