Cycling / Giro'd Italia: Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe) has won the second stage of the 2019 Giro d'Italia. The 25-year-old German champion completed the hard work of his teammates with a magnificent sprint. He relegated the actually favorites Elia Viviani (Deceuninck - Quick Step) and Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) to second and third place. Yesterday's stage winner Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) remains at the top of the rankings.
At the end of today's second Giro stage, Pascal Ackermann was able to underline his current impressive form and convert the preparatory work of his teammates into his first Grand Tour victory ever. The preceding 200km between Bologna and Fucecchio were relatively uneventful overall: the breakaway group of the day was caught with almost 10km to go under pressure from the teams from Bora-Hansgrohe and Deceuninck – Quick Step.
In the final meters, much looked like young Australian Caleb Ewan sprinting to his first win of this year's Giro. The Lotto Soudal professional started the sprint with Elia Viviani on the rear wheel from a promising position. However, Pascal Ackermann came literally shot from behind and brought his excess speed to the finish line in an impressive show of strength. Of course, Ackermann also takes the lead in the points classification. There are no major changes in the overall ranking. Yesterday's winner of the opening time trial, Primoz Roglic, is still in first place.
