Cycling: Stage win for Christophe Laporte (Cofidis). The Frenchman won the second stage of the Etoile de Bessèges extremely close ahead of his compatriot Clément Venturini (AG2R La Mondiale), who seemed happy just before the line. Christophe Laporte is now in the lead in the overall standings as well.
Mass sprint at La Calmette
154 mostly flat kilometers had to be mastered on the second stage of the Etoile de Bessèges. On the way from Saint-Genies-de-Malgrois to La Calmette, there were only two short climbs to overcome in the first half of the race. The wind should be a much greater challenge than the stage profile. However, the fugitives also had their problems with him. The day was marked by four French and one Belgian breakaway. However, the last of them was caught in time by the sprinter teams. As expected, there was a mass sprint in the village of La Calmette, which was designed as a circular village.
Laporte rightly celebrates – Venturini doesn't
In cycling there are often mass sprints, which are extremely narrow. But we rarely see such an enormously broad front of the field just a few meters from the finish line. The sprinters have spread out over the entire track and are fighting for the day's victory. In the end, however, only one could be happy - and twice! Then Christophe Laporte (Cofidis) not only won the stage. The Frenchman now also leads the overall standings. Behind him - or rather: next to him - the competitors were annoyed in rows. The runner-up Clement Venturini (AG2R La Mondiale) started to celebrate before noticing Christophe Laporte to his right.
