Cycling: Alessandro De Marchi (BMC) has won the 11th stage of the Vuelta a Espana. The Italian turned out to be the strongest escape. Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) gets to keep his red jersey.
Strong breakaway group
Today's 11th stage of the Vuelta a Espana got down to business. The longest section of this year's Tour of Spain took the drivers over 207,8 kilometers from Mombuey to Luintra. As expected, there were several attacks during the flat start phase, as the entire stage profile seemed made for breakaways. 19 riders were able to break away from the main field, including some top-class riders, such as Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Rafal Mayka (Bora-hansgrohe), Build Mollema (Trek Segafredo), Sergio Henao (Sky), Alessandro De Marchi (BMC), Omar friar (Astana) and Tiesj Benoot (Lotto Soudal). The lead quickly increased to over three minutes. The Spanish team Movistar took care of the speed work in the peloton in order not to let the strong climbers catch up too far in the overall standings. Mitchelton-Scott, on the other hand – the team led by leader Simon Yates – was completely passive.
De Marchi strongest – Buchmann loses time
Even if Thibaut Pinot virtually in the red jersey for almost the entire race, the Frenchman was unable to fulfill his dream. With the day's win, it shouldn't be anything either, because with Alessandro De Marchi (BMC) and Jonathan Restrepo (Katusha-Alpecin) were able to drop two professionals from the top group. On the last climb, De Marchi distanced his companion four kilometers from the finish and was therefore able to celebrate the stage win. The peloton also got down to business on the up to 10 percent steep hill. Team EF Education upped the pace for captain Rigoberto Urán powerful, so that some professionals got into dire straits. Lost among other things Emmanuel Buchman (Bora-hansgrohe) a few seconds. Simon yates (Mitchelton-Scott) defended his red jersey.
