Cycling: Max Walscheid (Sunweb) just missed out on victory on the seventh stage of the Tour of California. The final leg of the WorldTour tour also went to Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors). The Colombian was able to celebrate three stage wins. Overall winner was his compatriot Egan Bernal (Sky).
Walscheid celebrates and loses in the photo finish
A stage cannot end much tighter. After 143 kilometers there was a photo finish in Sacramento. With around 200 meters to go, everything seemed to be clear Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors). Once again, the Colombian was driven perfectly into position by his teammates, so that there was even a small gap behind him. Then, however, suddenly came on the left side of the road Caleb ewan (Mitchelton-Scott). However, the Australian couldn't go any further and lost ground again. Out of nowhere shot between the two sprinters Max Walscheid (Sunweb) through – and cheered. No wonder, because the German had by far the highest top speed. But this should not be enough. Through the finish photo, it was determined that Gaviria shot across the finish line a few millimeters before Walscheid. With his third stage win, the 23-year-old should now be the top favorite for the mass sprints in the Tour de France.

Colombia celebrates in California
In addition to Fernando Gaviria, another professional from Colombia shaped the Tour of California 2018. With two stage wins and the overall win Egan Bernal (Sky) can rightly be called the great dominator. The only 21-year-old cheered on both mountain stages and particularly impressed with his confident performances in the mountains. Egan Bernal already knew how to convince the spectators and experts on a few previous tours, so that almost all observers are now of the opinion that he is the talent of the century. However, it is uncertain whether we will be able to admire Egan Bernal on a Grand Tour this year, or whether Team Sky wants to carefully build up his exceptional talent. Either way: Colombian cycling continues to experience a real boom - and there is no end in sight.
We've added reaction to our #Amgentoc report as @Eganbernal and @TeamSky won big in California
