Cycling: Double victory for BMC at the Tour of California! Tejay Van Garderen won the individual time trial over 34,7 kilometers ahead of teammate Patrick Bevin. The American won the battle against the clock with a lead of seven seconds. Particularly important: He took over a minute from the overall leader Egan Bernal (Sky). Tejay Van Garderen is now also the new leader. Nils Politt (Katusha-Alpecin) was eleventh on the day.
Strong Bernal still loses a lot of time
In the cycling world, many experts are currently talking about super talent Egan Bernal (Sky). Today, however, the only 21-year-old Colombian had to take a small hit in California. Wearing his yellow jersey, he was the last professional to leave the individual time trial in San José. His time stopped at 42:10. He was 1:23 minutes behind Tejay Van Garderen – and thus rid of his yellow jersey. However, Bernal's performance was not bad, because his time was enough for 18th place in the daily classification. It's no secret that the lightweight doesn't like the fight against the clock, and with this physique it's no wonder. He is now 23 seconds behind the new leader in the overall standings. The decision about victory in the Tour of California is only made on the penultimate stage. Bernal will not give up yet.
Van Garderen is making an impressive comeback
Many years ago it was Tejay Van Garderen as one of the greatest talents for tours. Behind Cadel Evans he should be built up at Team BMC and at times even form a double lead in the Tour de France. The American could never live up to expectations. Despite some good results, the really big hit didn't materialize. In the past few months it has become quiet around him - until today! Two days ago he had to admit defeat to a few opponents up on the Gibraltar Road in eighth place. Overall victory was a long way off. Thanks to his strong performance in today's individual time trial, he now has the best cards again. He should be careful before the decisive sixth stage to South Lake Tahoe Egan Bernal (Sky) and the equally convincing one Daniel Martinez (EF Education).
It's victory for Tejay van Garderen on #Amgentoc stage 4 and after his impressive ride, he moves into the yellow jersey 👏👏👏👏. Congratulations Tejay! #Ride_BMC #DontCrackUnderPressure pic.twitter.com/FaWHX4cdQ5
