Cycling World Championships Innsbruck: Last week, former time trial world champion Tony Martin from the Katusha Alpecin team took a close look at the routes of the road world championships taking place in Innsbruck in September.
Four-time time trial world champion Tony Martin spent his break after the classics last week regenerating at altitude in Ötztal. In Hochgurgl at 2.150 meters above sea level, the pro from Team Katusha Alpecin recovered from the tough classic phase, which he had finished with a 72nd place at Paris-Roubaix. At the same time, Martin used the opportunity to inspect the time trial courses of the UCI Road World Championships 2018 in Innsbruck-Tyrol, which will take place from September 22nd to 30th.
After a grueling classic season, Katusha Alpecin pro Tony Martin traveled to Hochgurgl in Ötztal with his family last Wednesday.
“They were relaxing days in the snow. The highest ski resort in Austria is predestined for regeneration and relaxed training. A high-altitude training camp was originally planned, but I used the time to calm down. We went sledding and hiking. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take advantage of the perfect snow conditions because skiing is too risky at the moment."
During his stay, he was also able to take a closer look at the routes of the individual and team time trials as part of the UCI Road World Championships 2018 in Innsbruck-Tyrol. The men's and women's UCI team time trial starts in Area 47 in Ötztal, Austria's largest leisure and outdoor park, and leads the elite riders over 23 kilometers and 2018 meters in altitude to Innsbruck on Sunday, September 62,1, 427. At kilometer 45, the five-kilometer climb to Axams is the key point of the race. The men's elite individual time trial on September 26, 2018 begins in Rattenberg in the Alpbachtal Seenland and ends after 54,2 kilometers in the provincial capital of Innsbruck. The ascent to Gnadenwald is a short but steep climb, the most selective section of the route.
“The first impression of the two time trial routes is absolutely good. There is nothing critical to note and there are few technical units. The final climbs just before the finish are the key points in both team and individual time trials. They are crisp driveways and will bring the decision in both races.”
But before heading towards the Cycling World Championships in Innsbruck, the Giro d'Italia and then the Tour de France are next on the program for the German professional.
