Cycling: The tone between Chris Froome (Team Sky) and the UCI and its President David Lappartient is getting harsher. Lappartient recently said he thought it would be a disaster for the Briton to start the Tour de France, even though his doping case is still pending. Froome could now turn his turn in conversation with cyclingnews.com not resist a jab at the UCI President.
It was only a matter of time before Chris Froome would break his silence on the ongoing investigation and discussions at the Tirreno-Adriatico. The multiple Tour de France winner, who is currently in action at the Italian stage race, has now sharply criticized David Lappartient. When asked about the ongoing process and a possible start by Froome in the Tour of France in July, the UCI President said: "From a purely legal point of view, he can of course start, but it would be a disaster for the image of our sport and I don't want to cause problems for cycling."
Froome spoke to the cyclingnews.com portal before the start of the second stage of Tirreno-Adriatico and vented his anger: "I understand it's a difficult situation. The whole story was supposed to be UCI confidential but it got out and that changes everything [...] If he's that concerned about cycling's reputation, I think it would have been better to direct his concern to me or at least to the to express themselves in the right channels and not in the media.” He also clarified: "I race because the rules say I can and every other driver in my position has raced before."
