Cycling: This punishment has it all. The world cycling association UCI has suspended Dylan Groenewegen until May 7, 2021. In August, the Dutchman caused Fabio Jakobsen's serious fall.
Groenewegen pushed Jakobsen into the gang
The spectators gasped when it came to the Tour of Poland on August 5th this year there was a fall on the home stretch. Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo – Visma) was in front but pulled right just before reaching the finish line in Katowice. There just wanted him Fabio Jacobsen (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) overtake. The consequences were devastating. The Dutch champion crashed into the barrier with full force. These flew back onto the road and brought other professionals - including Dylan Groenewegen - down. Only Fabio Jakobsen, who was awarded the stage win and thus the leader's jersey by the jury, was seriously injured. The now 24-year-old also lost a lot of blood due to a head injury and had to be put into an artificial coma in the nearby hospital. For hours there was talk of a life-threatening condition before there was a slight all-clear.
No objection will be filed
Although the perpetrator and victim can be clearly identified when looking at the accident, Dylan Groenewegen also has a hard time nibbling on this incident. After crossing the finish line, the Dutchman seemed shocked and almost apathetic. In an interview a few days later, he burst into tears with a shaky voice. He never denied his guilt. Even after the UCI verdict, the 27-year-old is insightful and still affected. His return to the peloton will probably be just as difficult for him as it was for the fallen Fabio Jakobsen.
Dylan Groenewegen:
“The crash on the first stage of the Tour of Poland will forever remain a black chapter in my career. I deviated from my line during the sprint. I'm sorry because I want to be a fair sprinter. The consequences were very unfortunate and severe. I am very aware of this and I hope this will be a lesson for every sprinter.”
4 weeks after the reconstruction of my upper and lower jaw it was time for the stitches to come out. The process of healing is going well. The transplanted bone has to grow strong and firm for the next 4 months now. Next surgery is scheduled in 2021. pic.twitter.com/4MnBJ3KfXX
