Cycloross: Reigning World Cross Country Champion Wout van Aert has returned with a win at the Superprestige race in Gavere. The Belgian won the fifth race of the Superprestige series after his opponent Mathieu van der Poel, who was in the lead, was thrown back by two defects on the last lap and was able to take the overall lead as a result.
A good two weeks ago, the young Belgian decided to take a break from the competition and seemed a little at a loss because things weren't going well. Today, the reigning cyclocross world champion returned after a short training camp with a surprise win at the Superprestige Gavere.

On a muddy track, Van Aert and Van der Poel got off to a good start, while one or the other driver fell after a short time. Thus, the two rivals were able to set themselves apart from the competition and extend their lead. On the second lap, Mathieu van der Poel pulled away from Van Aert and opened up a lead of 17 seconds. However, with a lead of more than 30 seconds, the tide turned and Van der Poel suffered a defect at the beginning of the final lap. Due to another defect a little later, the Dutchman was no longer able to maintain his lead and had to let both the world champion and Toon Aerts go. With the win, Van Aert took over the lead from van der Poel in the overall standings with 72 points.
