Market: There is even more choice with the Haibike e-bikes 2018 - a total of over 120 models will be offered for the coming model year. An impressive number! In order to maintain an overview, the company restructures something and, for example, removes the connection between the engines of the two most popular model series, the XDURO and SDURO.
Haibike e-bikes 2018: SDURO and XDURO in future without motor connection
For fans of the Haibike E-MTBs, it will be time to rethink in the coming model year: While the two model series XDURO and SDURO have always stood for the two drives from Bosch and Yamaha, this connection is now being broken, but the subdivision of the E-MTBs is being retained nevertheless. Only the focus changes: In terms of geometry and equipment, the SDURO bikes are aimed more at the sporty touring rider who is looking for a potent companion for off-road adventures. In concrete terms, this means, for example: steeper steering angle, higher bottom bracket, higher cockpit.
On the other hand, if you are looking for a motor-assisted trail tiller that can also cope with extreme conditions and that is at the cutting edge of the MTB market in terms of geometry and alignment, you should probably take a look at the XDURO models. The magic words that currently characterize the (E-)MTB sector can also be found here - long reach, flat steering angle and an overall very sporty seating position on the bike.
So it makes perfect sense that Haibike removes the motor connection between the two model series and you have the choice of using drives from Bosch or Yamaha. While the battery integration with the PowerTube 500 in the down tube and the new eMTB mode are causing a stir at Bosch, Yamaha has a completely new motor with the PW-SE.
Haibike E-Bikes 2018: New Yamaha PW-SE motor
With the Yamaha PW-X two years ago, the Japanese were able to take a huge step forward and close the gap to Bosch, Shimano and Co. that had existed until then. With the PW-SE, the next evolutionary stage of the engine follows in 2018, which is completely tailored to sporty use - hence the name: SE stands for Sport Edition. The new addition, however, ranks between the well-known PW and PW-X variants - at a reasonable price, the performance of the top PW-X engine is almost the same.
But what is actually new? The hardware remains unchanged at heart - the Yamaha engine was not lacking in power in the past anyway. Rather, the response behavior was screwed through software optimizations in order to tease out more liveliness and an overall more sporty and at the same time more natural support from the Japanese power pack. The problem that the previous generation had with a high cadence has also been addressed - here the drive used to sweat and missed the last punch. Now there is a whopping 70Nm of torque up to a cadence of 110.
Something has also happened when it comes to connectivity: there is now a Bluetooth interface ex works, thanks to which the Yamaha drive is now also compatible with Haibike's eConnect smart bike concept. Unfortunately, with Yamaha you have to do without a complete integration of the battery into the down tube - but if you are a fan of long tours and also change the battery there on the way, you could possibly get something positive out of this apparent disadvantage.
Haibike E-Bikes 2018: Modular Rail System – attach accessories directly to the bike
Hardly any innovation in the e-bike market can be seen more often in 2018 than the new integrated battery for Bosch motors. In almost all models across manufacturer boundaries, the energy supplier will be well hidden and protected in the down tube. Of course, there are first of all optical reasons and advantages: The bike looks nice and clean and, if integrated accordingly, is almost impossible to identify as an e-bike or e-MTB. This is also the case with many Haibike e-bikes in 2018 with a Bosch drive. In addition to the simple look, you can also enjoy another big advantage here: the Modular Rail System (MRS).
To put it simply, the MRS is just a rail on the top of the down tube – where the battery used to be. So far, so unspectacular. It only gets interesting when you look at what Haibike is doing with this frame. Some attachments and accessories can be attached to it. Starting with the drinking bottle, which is held in place with a magnetic fastening system from FidLock, through a frame lock and a frame bag to an additional battery, the so-called range extender.
A rubber seal is also included in the scope of delivery, which can be shortened as required and which covers the remaining, open rail and protects it from moisture and dirt.
Haibike E-Bikes 2018: eConnect now also for retrofitting
Already in the last model year, Haibike presented its own smart bike solution, eConnect, which fully exploits the technical possibilities of the 21st century and brings them into line with the e-bike. What does that mean specifically? Anti-theft, GPS tracking, route recording, immobilizer and much more. The functionality of the eConnect systems will remain untouched in 2018; However, the system is now also available for bikes with a Yamaha drive, whereas it was previously reserved for bikes with a Bosch motor.
The functions of Haibike eConnect at a glance
The OnBoardUnit, i.e. the brain of the eConnect system, is located under the ski plate on the underside of the frame. The component is completely weatherproof and stable enough to withstand the conditions at this point. In addition to the electronics itself, there is also a buffer battery in the housing. All data is retained even if the battery is removed and the GPS location continues to work even if a thief removes the battery from the frame, for example.
Speaking of GPS and positioning: A connection to the mobile network is required to communicate with the smartphone app in the event of theft or to send an emergency text message after a fall. Haibike is cooperating with Deutsche Telekom here. If you buy a bike with eConnect, the service is included free of charge for two years. After expiry, an extension for a further three years costs 99 euros.
If you own a Haibike SDURO or XDURO without eConnect, you can probably retrofit it from now on: all bikes from model year 2014 can be upgraded to smart bikes.

Haibike E-Bikes 2018: Haibike XDURO AllMtn
The XDURO AllMtn is the sporty trail all-rounder from Haibike. Apart from improvements in detail, there are no new features in the Yamaha variants, but the two Bosch bikes are completely different: Here there is the Intube down tube with an integrated battery and a significantly more aggressive geometry than before. In addition, the suspension travel at the front and rear is 150mm - if that is not enough, you can take a look at the E-Enduro Nduro.
