Cycling: World Champion Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) won the 5th stage of the 2017 Tour de Suisse. The Slovak prevailed in the sprint of a large group in front of local hero Michael Albasini (Orica-Scott) and Matteo Trentin (Quick-Step Floors). Damiano Caruso (BMC) continues to lead in the overall standings.
Miguel Angel Lopez gets out
The fifth stage led the riders of this year's Tour de Suisse over 220 kilometers from Bex to Cevio. The aim was to cross the Simplon Pass. However, since this was in the middle of the race, it shouldn't have much of an impact on the result. Some professionals were no longer at the start or got out during the section. Including Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) and Luke Durbridge (Orica-Scott).
No chance for the escapees
Six escapees escaped quite early after the start, but they never really had any realistic hopes of winning the day. In the end everything rolled back together and a large group sprint ensued. Nikias Arndt (Sunweb) opened the sprint for his captain Michael Matthews. But today the Australian had no chance, because world champion Peter Sagan easily shot past everyone. The Slovak thus extends his record at the Tour de Suisse. There were no significant changes in the overall ranking.
