Market: Full concentration is just as essential for downhill and enduro riding as a perfect grip and position on the pedal. For over a quarter of a century, Shimano has been studying the anatomy of the foot to develop shoe-pedal systems that give cyclists the best possible riding conditions. Together with the British downhill stars Athertons, Shimano is now presenting the gravity shoe and pedal lineup for the 2018 model year.
All mountain shoe AM901
The all-mountain shoe AM901 was specially developed for downhill riders and enduro bikers. The reworked upper material is said to make it more difficult for water to penetrate and also to dry faster. The toe cover offers the rider extra protection. Other features of the AM901 all-mountain shoe are the quick lacing system, the non-slip rubber sole and the "Pedal Channel" - this should guarantee a stable pedal connection, even if the shoe is not clicked in. According to Shimano, the ideal shoe for the Saint SPD pedal PD-M820.
All mountain shoe AM701
The little brother of the AM901, the all-mountain shoe AM701, is also SPD-compatible. For trail rides, the AM701 has a harder midsole - according to the manufacturer, the degree of stiffness is 6. Other differences compared to its big brother are the ankle protection and the missing lacing cover. In addition to a blue version, the AM701 all-mountain shoe will also be available in bright green.
Gravity Shoe GR900
The GR900 gravity shoe is completely new for the 2018 model year. The new shoe for demanding gravity riders combines the protective properties of the AM901 all-mountain shoe with a simplified sole structure. Equipped with a Michelin rubber sole for improved walking characteristics, the Gravity shoe GR900 should offer outstanding grip. For best performance, Shimano recommends the Saint PD-M828 flat pedal.
Gravity Shoe GR700
The Gravity shoe GR700 is also completely new. In favor of ventilation of the foot in the shoe, the lacing was not covered. The Gravity Shoe GR700 is available in a matching version for women.
Saint SPD Pedal PD-M820
The Saint SPD pedal PD-M820 is the ideal complement to the AM901 shoe. The aluminum pedal body was specially designed for the all-mountain shoe. The double-sided aluminum cage construction protects the SPD mechanism from damage. If the shoe is not clipped in, four adjustable pins on the sole provide support. Shimano specifies the weight of the Saint PD-M820 SPD pedals as 546 grams.
Saint Flat Pedal PD-M828
The octagonal arched Saint Flat Pedal PD-M828 comes directly with twelve steel pins per side. Depending on the individual requirements, the steel pins optionally protrude 3mm or 5mm in height. The pedal is designed for aggressive downhill or freeride use. The Saint flat pedal PD-M828 should be characterized by a secure stand and stability.
Deore XT flat pedal PD-M8040
The Deore XT flat pedal PD-M8040 is available in two sizes for trail and enduro. The smaller pedal is recommended for shoe sizes from 36 to 44, the larger pedal for shoe sizes from 43 to 48. Characteristic of the Deore XT flat pedal PD-M8040 is the slightly curved design and the ten pins per side. The pedals are sold with 3mm or 5mm pins. The weight is estimated at 460 grams (S/M) and 503 grams (M/L).
Flat Pedal PD-GR500
While those interested in the three pedals mentioned above will have to wait until November, buyers of the PD-GR500 flat pedal can already buy them in August. The successor to the PD-MX80 pedal is the entry-level model for trail riders and all-mountain bikers. Height-adjustable pins are a matter of course for the PD-GR500 flat pedal, as are chromoly axles and sealed cartridge bearings. The pedal will be available in black or silver and weighs 533 grams.
