MTB cycling: The third round of the MTB Bundesliga 2017 was held in Wombach last weekend in summery temperatures. The women's race was won by the Dutch champion Anne Terpstra, Simon Stiebjahn won the men's race.
Things are going really well for Anne Terpstra from the Netherlands at the moment – after the triumph in Gedern, she was able to clinch her second win in a row in Wombach. The Ghost Team driver dominated the field from the second of six laps and won with a lead of 2:21 minutes. The Dutch champion can thus further extend her overall lead in the Bundesliga. Second was her Swedish teammate Alexandra Engen. Hanna Klein finished third, 4:14 minutes behind. The Superior Bikes rider might have had the chance to change the order, but a rear wheel defect temporarily threw the Freiburg rider far behind.
It was very exciting for the men. Although the three-man top trio of the initial phase also finished on the podium at the end, a few interludes made for entertaining enjoyment. Team Bulls drivers Simon Stiebjahn and Ben Zwiehoff (Bergamont Factory Racing) fought a particularly heated battle at the front. The duo was at eye level up to the last lap, but Simon Stiebjahn was more explosive on the climb and was able to make up valuable time. At the finish, 17 seconds separated first and second place. Lukas Baum (Course Chat Consulting Racing Team) was able to maintain third place and thus also made it onto the podium.
Jens Schuermans (Scott-Creuse Oxygen) caused sweaty hands at times. Two laps before the end, the Belgian caught up with the leading group and then took the lead. However, a tire defect cost him the win. "It was my own fault. A bit disappointing, because I could have fought for victory," said Schuermans after the race. However, second-placed Ben Zwiehoff was not disappointed. "Hey, that was fun!" he shouted at the finish and congratulated Simon Stiebjahn.
