Cycling: Silvan Dillier (BMC) won stage 6 of the 100 Giro d'Italia. The Swiss formed a breakaway group together with the Austrian Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora-hansgrohe). This arrived 39 seconds ahead of the field at the destination of Terme Luigiane. This means that the 100th Giro d'Italia has one winner each from Germany, Austria and Switzerland after just six stages.
Lukas Pöstlberger tries again today
Fernando Gaviria was able to win yesterday at this year's Giro d'Italia with his second victory 5st stage win. Today the Colombian didn't get into position. Because the actually expected mass sprint did not materialize. The breakaways prevailed on the undulating profile over 217 kilometers from Reggio Calabria to Terme Luigiane. The two Trek Segafredo pros Mads Pedersen and Jasper Stuyven were able to break away early along with Simone Andreetta (Bardiani CSF), the Swiss Silvan Dillier (BMC) and the Austrian Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora-hansgrohe), who First stage in Sardinia could win. The peloton let the group pull away with a lead of over seven minutes. The sprinter teams probably miscalculated and expected a slightly stronger headwind near the sea. The quintet secured all intermediate rankings along the way and kept the gap in a dangerous area. With 15 kilometers to go the lead was still three minutes.
Silvan Dillier leaves the strong sprinter Jasper Stuyven behind
The sprinter teams realized that there won't be enough time for a mass sprint today. André Greipel had to give up on a short climb. The wavy profile at the end of the stage seemed to be a bit too difficult for the pure sprinters to catch up again. There were several attacks in the leading group shortly before the finish. Mads Pedersen and Simone Andreetta were no longer able to follow the pace. The leading trio should decide the stage win among themselves. Knowing full well that Jasper Stuyven is the strongest sprinter among them, Silvan Dillier started very early. Stuyven sucked his rear wheel, but couldn't get past. With this, the Swiss Silvan Dillier celebrates his first stage victory in a Grand Tour. The Austrian Lukas Pöstlberger finished third. After six stages we have already seen a winner from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
