Giro d'Italia: Giro d'Italia rest day #1: what has happened so far...

8 May 2017 by Michael Behringer

Cycling: The 100th Giro d'Italia is just three stages old. And the cycling fans have already seen a lot. Although we've only had three flat stages behind us, there's no question of boredom. We were allowed to cheer an Austrian and a German. Both won a stage and have worn the pink jersey. But how have the classification drivers fared so far? We create a brief overview.

The 100th Giro d'Italia fulfills three lifelong dreams on the first three stages

When the course of the 100th Giro d'Italia was announced, many experts expected a leisurely start in Sardinia. The peloton had other plans - fortunately! Right on the 1st stage there was no mass sprint. Austria's Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora-hansgrohe) fooled all the sprinters and simply made off in the last kilometer. he was gone Completely unexpectedly, he was the first wearer of the pink jersey. In any case, this was a perfect start for the German team Bora-hansgrohe. Because after the first section you led in all ratings. Already after 2st stage everything was different again. There was a mass sprint, which André Greipel (Lotto Soudal) won with ease. With that, he grabbed the Maglia Rosa. However, he was only allowed to wear the leader's jersey for a single day. Because then came the wind squadron on the 3st stage and Colombian Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) secured the stage win and Rosa.

Steven Kruijswijk & Ilnur Zakarin lose time - Bob Jungels is the big winner

Since there have not yet been any serious mountains to climb, no preliminary decision has yet been made in terms of overall victory. Nevertheless, two drivers from our Favorites Preview already lost time. Steven Kruijswijk was held up by a fall just before the three kilometer mark on the first stage. The Dutchman lost 1 seconds. Ilnur Zakarin caught it on the second leg. The Russian suffered a defect just before the finish. Although he found the connection to the main field again, he was no longer able to fight his way to the front. The sprint holes opened up and Zakarin lost 13 seconds at the end. While all of the other favorites we named are in the same time, Bob Jungels has pulled ahead on Stage 20. He was involved in the sprint relay and now leads the rest of the favorites by a margin of ten seconds. Preliminary decisions have not yet been made in any direction.
