Cycling: Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) won Stage 3 of the Giro d'Italia, taking over the Maglia Rosa as well. The Colombian was brought into a perfect position by his team-mates in a wind relay. Second was Rüdiger Selig (Bora-hansgrohe) ahead of Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek-Segafredo). André Greipel lost - like most of the ranking riders - 13 seconds to the stage winner.
No chance escapes on the last day in Sardinia
Today's 3rd stage of the 100th Giro d'Italia should be the last one in Sardinia. Drivers are allowed to travel to Sicily tomorrow and enjoy their first day of rest. But today we had to work again. 148 kilometers from Tortoli to Cagliari were on the program. The profile was mainly flat and therefore something for the sprinters. Nevertheless, after ten kilometers Ivan Rovny (Gazprom-RusVelo), Jan Tratnik (CCC Sprandi Polkowice), Eugert Zhupa (Wilier) and Kristian Sbaragli (Dimension Data) tried to break away. After the latter won the first sprint classification, he dropped back into the peloton. The other three pros continued to battle the windmills. But it was in vain, because the field finally snapped up Jan Tratnik, who had defended himself the longest of all the fugitives. Due to the strong wind, not only the sprinter teams could be found in front. The ranking riders also wanted to avoid wind edges and ride as far ahead as possible.
Quick-Step Floors puts the field on edge - Gaviria conquers Rosa
Various teams took turns at the front of the peloton. The strong wind made it hectic. Almost all teams wanted to drive at the front. When Quick-Step Floors took over, there were immediate consequences. The classic squad pushed the pace and put the field on the edge. Around 20 drivers were able to hold on before a gap opened up. André Greipel was also up front before he dropped back from the first season due to a defect. Several drivers could no longer follow the speed dictate. Quick-Step Floors was represented with half the team, including ranking rider Bob Jungels and sprinter Fernando Gaviria. Also there: Rüdiger Selig! The chasing group tried with all their might to close the gap, but they couldn't. Quick-Step Floors played to their superiority and led Fernando Gaviria to his first Grand Tour victory. The Colombian also takes over the pink jersey from André Greipel.
