Cycling news: On May 1st, the WorldTour premiere of the German classic Eschborn-Frankfurt will take place. Exactly two months before the Grand Départ in Düsseldorf, 11 WorldTour teams and a top-class starting field will be honored in the Hessian banking metropolis. In addition to the German cycling who's who with John Degenkolb, André Greipel and Tony Martin, the reigning road world champion Peter Sagan will also be at the starting line.
For the 2017 season, the Eschborn-Frankfurt classic in May was promoted to the top racing class of the UCI. This year the organizers can present what is perhaps the strongest starting field in the history of the Hessian race. Not only will 11 WorldTour teams make the journey to Frankfurt, but most of them will be top-class teams led by their star drivers. Of course it is a matter close to the heart for the German drivers and teams to be at the starting line on May Day and present themselves to the German fans. The race is always something special for John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) in particular – after all, the 28-year-old lives with his family not far from the start in Oberusel.
Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin) and André Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) will also compete for victory at the Alte Oper. With Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe), Nikias Arndt (Team Sunweb) and Nico Denz (AG2R), there are also a few promising young professionals at home who would of course prefer to get a place on the podium.
The German team BORA-hansgrohe has also now announced that road world champion Peter Sagan will also celebrate his premiere in Frankfurt - the Slovakian shooting star will be competing in the Hessian May classic for the first time: "Of course it's something special for the team, but also for me personally, to start here in Germany in front of our fans. I hope we're celebrating our first big cycling party, because this year the Tour de France start in Düsseldorf is still ahead of us. These will be exciting weeks and I hope that German cycling can benefit from all of this, says Peter Sagan.
