News in brief: Nikias Arndt (Team Sunweb) can celebrate his first win early in the season. At the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in Melbourne, the 25-year-old German won the sprint just ahead of Simon Gerrans (Orica-Scott) and Cameron Meyer (KoraMentha). With Paul Mertens (LottoNL-Jumbo), a second German made it into the top 10.
First win of the season for Nikias Arndt and Team Sunweb in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. It is a tailor-made start for the German team, which was so battered last season, and which can already score its first WorldTour points in January. It was a hard-fought race with numerous attacks and a tight final sprint. Just under a kilometer before crossing the finish line for the last time on the circuit, the Australian Cameron Meyer plucked up courage, attacked and opened up a large gap. In literally the very last second, the brave Meyer was conceded by the onrushing Arndt and Gerrans - the German crossed the finish line just a few centimeters ahead of the Orica-Scott professional.
