News in brief: After a very good Tour Down Under, in which the guys from BORA-hansgrohe were not granted a stage win, the German WorldTour team finally had reason to celebrate at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. In the sprint, Sam Bennett prevailed against Danny van Poppel (Team Sky) and Scott Sunderland (IsoWhy Sports – SwissWellness).
After a comparatively wild race marked by numerous attacks on the circuit in the Australian metropolis of Melbourne, the expected mass sprint took place in the finale. BORA-hansgrohe's lead-out worked perfectly and in the best position, Irishman Sam Bennett finally started the sprint. His closest pursuer, Danny van Poppel, gave up early because he had to realize that the 20-year-old from BORA-hansgrohe would be faster that day.
Sam Bennett: “It's wonderful to get the first win so early in the season. I would like to thank BORA - hansgrohe for my great racing program and for all the support we have. Of course, I would also like to thank my teammates, who did an incredible job. They protected me well throughout the day and put me in the perfect position at the end.”
