News in brief: Exciting times for Marco Mathis – after his surprising coup at the road world championships in Qatar, where he won time trial gold ahead of compatriot Maximilian Schachmann in the U23 class, he is now making the leap into the elite class of cycling. The 22-year-old previously rode for the Continental racing team Rad-Net ROSE and signed a two-year contract with Katusha-Alpecin.
Marco Mathis on his move: "It's a dream come true for me. Going from a Continental team to the WorldTour is a big step, but I'm looking forward to it. I think the team suits me perfectly; with bike outfitter Canyon they currently have the best time trial bike in the world and the classic team is also great. This year I was a starter for Pascal Ackermann and I hope to do the same for Alexander Kristoff in 2017. Alpecin's entry also feels good to me - in the last two years they have given great support to German cycling and you can already see the first results of this commitment. Canyon and Alpecin worked very hard to create another squad position, although the planning for this had actually already been completed. I also meet a very good friend in Nils Politt – I can hardly wait to meet all my new teammates.”
Marco Mathis is the fourth German driver alongside Tony Martin, Nils Politt and Rick Zabel in the Katusha-Alpecin team, which will be driving under a Swiss license for 2017.
