Cycling: Tony Martin is the new world champion in the individual time trial. The 31-year-old rode in his own league at the World Championships in Doha today, beating second-placed and defending champion Vasil Kiryienka by 46 seconds. The Spaniard Jonathan Castroviejo follows in third place, more than a minute behind the German.
Tony Martin's dominance is back
He actually did it again: Tony Martin became world champion in the individual time trial for the fourth time in his career. Of course, the experts were still counting on the German today, but his victory still came as a surprise. He was beaten several times in the individual time trials this season and his dominance seemed to be gone. His concentration on the classics has ensured that his training focus has shifted and with it his qualities. But today it was suddenly there again, the dominance. With a full 46 seconds ahead of the defending champion Kiryienka and 1:11 on Castroviejo, he didn't give the entire world elite a chance. After winning the team time trial, Tony Martin can now look forward to his second gold medal at the 2016 World Championships in Doha.
Dennis and Dumoulin disappoint – Hollenstein strong
Holla die Waldfee - Reto Hollenstein set an example with ninth place and a deficit of 1:51. The 31-year-old Swiss is still driving for the IAM team, but will switch to the Katusha team next season. Although he has always been regarded as a passable time trialist, he was hardly overshadowed by Fabian Cancellara and Stefan Küng. It was precisely that Küng who could have been expected to make a breakthrough at this World Championships in Doha, but instead he only finished 17th. This means that he is again only the second best Swiss - although the great Fabian Cancellara is not among them. Rohan Dennis and Tom Dumoulin are also likely to be disappointed. Along with Tony Martin and Vasil Kiryienka, the two time trial specialists were considered favorites for victory or at least for the medals. At the end of the day, both got nothing. Dennis was only sixth, Dumoulin only eleventh.
