Cycling World Championship: Lotte Kopecky wins the world title

August 13, 2023 by Michael Behringer

Lotte Kopeky

Cycling: Lotte Kopecky is the name of the new world champion on the road. The Belgian won the gold medal at the World Championship road race in Glasgow.

Lotte Kopecky has the biggest punch

With an attack in the last few kilometers has Lotte Kopeky won the women's world title. The Belgian was part of the small group of favorites that fell apart in the last quarter of the race. With seven kilometers to go, she sat down together with the Dane Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig and finally let them stand on the next climb with an irresistible acceleration. Montrose Street then took advantage of Dutch Demi Vollering to take Silver by beating the Swiss Marlene Reusser distanced and finally caught up with Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig.

Van Vleuten with a breakdown, Vollering with cramps

On the 154,1 kilometer course from Loch Lomond to Glasgow, the preliminary decision came early on, as the main field fell apart and the group of favorites was able to pull away. The Swiss woman Elise Chabby presented herself as a soloist for a long time, but was caught 15 kilometers from the finish. Last year's winner suffered almost at the same time Annemiek van Vleuten a technical defect. With that, the Dutchwoman was out of the fight for the medals. So the way was actually clear for her compatriot Demi Vollering. However, she struggled with cramps in the last ten kilometers. Germany's hope Liana Lippert unfortunately couldn't keep up with the group of favorites when it was formed.
