Cycling: Pascal Ackermann can look forward to a silver medal in the U23 category. After a strong team performance in the sprint, the 22-year-old had to admit defeat to the Norwegian Kristoffer Halvorsen. Behind third-placed Jakub Marecko, Phil Bauhaus, another German driver, made it into the front ranks.
After the course of the race over almost 170 km on the circuit in Qatar, it was not a big surprise that there was a duel between a driver from the Norwegian team and one from the German team. After the escape group of the day was finally put off the field about 20 km before the finish, it was the white jerseys of the drivers of the BDR and the Norwegians who were regularly seen at the front and set the pace. The Scandinavians had already done most of the tracking work beforehand and put in an impressively strong performance in what was once again extremely hot temperatures in Doha.
Even before the 100km mark, the first riders in the field were struggling with cramps, which were certainly partly due to the hot outside conditions. In the final, the youngsters also lost concentration and so, despite the less demanding course, there were repeated falls, some of them heavy. When the field, which had already been depleted after the French team increased the pace, turned onto the home straight, Pascal Ackermann found himself in a promising position: Phil Bauhaus had started the sprint for his teammate, who also opened the hunt for gold. The eventual winner, Kristoffer Halvorsen, stayed in Ackermann's slipstream for a long time, then got the perfect timing and overtook the 22-year-old German in the final meters. Behind him, the Italian Jakub Marecko conceded rider after rider in the final 50m and pushed his way onto the podium - to the chagrin of Phil Bauhaus, who had to settle for the thankless fourth place.
