MTB cycling: The British Rachel Atherton (Trek Factory Racing DH) and the American Aaron Gwin (The YT Mob) were able to finish the last run of the UCI Downhill World Cup 2016 in Vallnord / Andorra as overall winners. Both Atherton and Gwin thus repeated their previous year's overall victory.
After an unbeatable season, nobody could take the overall victory of the UCI Downhill World Cup 2016 from the Briton at the final in Vallnord. No fewer than 13(!) World Cup victories in a row can be attributed to Atherton, who dominated the women's World Cup in an impressive manner and thus deservedly celebrated her place as the overall winner again. Despite back problems, the Trek Factory Racing DH team rider clinched victory again in the final cup race of the season, relegating Tracey Hannah (Polygon UR) to second by a six-second margin, who was behind Manon Carpenter (Madison Saracen Factory Team ) took third place.
In the men's category, Danny Hart (MS Mondraker Team) was unable to completely eliminate Aaron Gwin's lead in the overall standings, despite his victory in the final in Vallnord. The rain that set in during the Elite Men's race meant that the UCI Downhill World Cup overall standings ended up being quite close. Gwin was only 55th in the last race due to the weather, while Danny Hart was able to finish his race in the dry. In the end, the American took overall victory with 1252 points, Danny Hart was second overall, only 26 points behind. Troy Brosnan (Specialized Racing) held his ground in third place overall.
