Cycling: Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) won the 100th anniversary of the Rhenish classic Rund um Köln. After 205km, the Dutchman prevailed against the favorite André Greipel (Lotto Soudal), Nikias Arndt sprinted to third place.
After the breakaway group of the day was finally caught 12km before the finish, life came into the race, which had been rather moderately entertaining up to that point: First, Taylor Phinney (BMC) surprised the assembled sprinter teams by attacking in a completely unexpected way and within a few meters there was already a gap of over ten seconds. LottoNL-Jumbo and Lotto Soudal at the front of the field worked hard to catch the American back in time and finally did just before the 5km mark. Then came the time of the sprint trains.
In the final, as previously indicated, it was the two teams LottoNL-Jumbo and Lotto Soudal who took command. The leadouts worked, André Greipel was waiting for his moment in second position behind Groenewegen, but was pinched at the wrong time and couldn't get out of this situation. Groenewegen recognized the situation at lightning speed and started sprinting – by the time Greipel was free to drive, it was already too late: the Dutchman in the yellow LottoNL jersey crossed the finish line with a large lead. After crossing the finish line, Greipel struggled with the situation in the final. Everything went according to plan "Then Renshaw came and punched me out of position. That was incorrect. He knew he couldn't win and then he does something like that."
