Track News: After a rather disappointing start in the afternoon, the German athletes brought the first day of the Track World Championships in London to a conciliatory conclusion. In the team sprint there were bronze medals for men and women.
In the end there was still cheering in the German camp - after the mixed performance of the foursome in the afternoon, who had to be content with a lucky sixth place in the qualification, there were still two podium places to celebrate in the evening. First, Kristina Vogel and Miriam Welte fought an exciting duel in the small final with Australia (32,740 vs. 32,871) in the women's team sprint.
Even if that didn't work out, the bronze medal is a great success: Miriam Welte had to deal with numerous injuries in the winter and found it difficult to get back on track - yesterday she showed a lot of improvement and of course also benefited from the usual strong Kristina Vogel . The Chinese set the fastest time, but were disqualified due to a faulty substitution – so this year's title went to the team from Russia (32,679).
The men also managed to catch up shortly afterwards and win the second German medal. Rene Enders, Max Niederlag and Joachim Eilers still had big problems in qualifying the evening before and only made it into the finals with a lot of luck and a thousandth of a second ahead. When it came down to it, however, the trio delivered: In the race for third place, they relegated the French to the places and were still able to celebrate a podium finish (43,536). Gold went to Kiwis from New Zealand (43,257) ahead of neighbors The Netherlands (43,469).
The evening was rather disappointing for Lucas Liß, who, as the defending champion in the scratch, did not get past seventh place. Mieke Kröger also missed out on the medals in fifth place in the single pursuit. Tonight it will be exciting in London: In addition to decisions in the women's scratch and keirin, attention is mainly focused on the foursome and it will be seen whether he can show the necessary improvement in the first round and still be able to fight for a possible bronze medal. The live stream starts at 20:00 p.m. – as always, you can find the link here.
