Cycling: Now the cat is finally out of the bag. After the sparrows had already whistled from the roofs in the past few weeks, the confirmation is coming today: The British top sprinter Mark Cavendish is moving from Etixx-QuickStep to the ProContinental Team MTN-Qhubeka, which thanks to a new sponsor will be called Team Dimension in the coming season Data will start.
'Team Dimension Data riding for Qhubeka' – that's the new, somewhat long name of the former MTN-Qhubeka team. The ink under the sponsorship agreement with the South African IT service provider Dimension Data has been dry since July, but only yesterday it was announced that the company, which is also a partner of the Tour de France, will be the new main sponsor of the African ProContinental team. Team boss Doug Ryder was extremely pleased: “We are extremely pleased that Dimension Data will be our new namesake and main sponsor. In this way we can continue our work around African cycling and make the Qhubeka Foundation known all over the world.”
As if the new sponsor and the renaming of the team weren't enough news for one week, Mark Cavendish dropped the next bombshell via Twitter today. As before has been suspected in many places, the Briton will join the South African team next season. "I look forward to being part of this team in 2016. I have observed the development very closely, especially during this season, and was really impressed by the spirit, the strength and the great team spirit." said 'Cav' in a first statement.
Cavendish will also bring his lead-out man Mark Renshaw from Etixx-QuickStep to Dimension Data, where he will meet his former collaborator Bernhard Eisel, who is leaving Sky and also joining the team. Cavendish is very good friends with the Austrian and the two have already traveled together for Colombia-Highroad from 2007 to 2011 and for Team Sky in 2012. Big family gathering now at Team Dimension Data. In any case, we are very excited!
