Cycling: Bitter end of the Tour of Spain for Peter Sagan. After the Tinkoff-Saxo pro collided with a companion motorcycle and fell at the end of yesterday's stage, he did reach the finish line, but his chances of winning the day were gone. As his racing team just announced, things are getting even worse: Due to injury, the tour is now over for the Slovak.
The motorcycle that caused the crash was probably a Shimano service vehicle that approached Sagan's group of riders from behind and tried to weave through. Sagan didn't see the bike coming behind him and then it crashed. At least that's how the victim himself described the accident. “If I had just fallen or had contact with another rider, that would be part of the sport for me. But being run over by a companion bike? That should not be accepted […] I hope that something will finally change in this regard.” The understandably upset Sagan said.
Immediately after the incident, the Slovak, who is well known as a hothead, let himself be carried away to a brief – quite understandable – freak out, for which he was billed afterwards. "In the team hotel I found out that I should pay a fine of 300 francs - for insults and behavior that would damage the reputation of cycling. Of course I'll pay for it, but I don't think it's fair." According to the press release published in the evening, Tinkoff-Saxo is also considering taking legal action against those who caused the accident.
While the injuries sustained -- mostly bruises and scrapes -- aren't too dramatic, the team still decided to take Sagan out. The decision was probably also made with a view to the upcoming road world championships in mid-September, for which Sagan would certainly like to be at full strength again. Until then, we wish you a speedy recovery and a speedy recovery!
