Product news: Tacx NEO Smart: Innovative indoor trainer with direct drive

Market: Gone are the days of complicated calibrations and maintenance interventions! With the NEO Smart, Tacx is launching an indoor trainer with a direct drive that works completely without mechanical transmissions.

The innovative solution completely dispenses with rollers or belts and thus consistently eliminates the disruptive influences that are common with mechanical transmissions. In order to be able to generate the necessary resistance, 32 neodymium magnets rotate around 30 coils in the permanent magnet motor. The magnets sit on a steel plate that is connected directly to the cassette. With increasing current strength in the coils, the magnetic force increases and thus the braking power. A loss of energy during training is therefore almost completely impossible.

Up to 2200 watts can be generated with sufficient torque. Even at low speeds such a high resistance is possible. An inertia control, realized with a virtual flywheel, continuously monitors the movements and adapts the system to the driving style within a few milliseconds. The indoor trainer should convey an authentic road feeling on flat routes as well as on steep descents or ascents.

Wireless communication with the smartphone or tablet takes place via ANT+ and Bluetooth Smart. Performance data such as the standard speed can be read and monitored on several devices at the same time. Of course, the interface also allows convenient control of the indoor trainer. Thanks to the implemented ANT+ FE-C protocol, the NEO Smart can also be controlled via third-party software.
