Testing: SKS Spaero Double Action – double the power ahead

25 May 2015 by Michael Faiss

Test: SKS stands for high-quality air pumps like no other manufacturer, at least in this country. With the Spaero Double Action, SKS proves that the company from the Sauerland region, which has now been in existence for over 70 years, is still not lacking in innovative spirit - a handy pump for MTBs that surprises in several respects.

The SKS Spaero Double Action – key data

At first sight, of course, it is noticeable that the SKS is significantly larger than most of the other mini pumps from the competition. But if you keep the area of application in mind, this shouldn't weigh as heavily as you might initially assume - the Spaero Action, with its maximum pressure of 5 bar and the high pump volume, is clearly designed for off-road use. Here, small trail backpacks are now almost the norm and there is definitely room for the SKS pump. A frame holder is also included in the scope of delivery, with the help of which the pump can be attached to the bottle holder eyelets.

When the pump is opened, the aluminum air piston comes to light, which at first glance does not offer any major features. But far from it: As one could have guessed from the name of the pump, the piston of the SKS is a double-stroke piston, which means that the tires are filled with air both when pulling and when pushing. Only a few other competitors in this size class offer this.

In general, the processing is very high quality. The brushed aluminum feels good and looks great. Under the cap at the top of the pump is an extendable hose, at the end of which is the actual pump head. This also fits seamlessly into the successful processing.sksspaero2

In practice, the SKS Spaero Double Action is completely convincing - for three reasons in particular: The excellent pump head is a real all-round success - it is suitable for Auto and Presta valves and can be screwed onto the valve in no time at all and is child's play. This works better than most other pumps with a screw head and is usually much more confidence-inspiring than pump heads for clamping, although screwing them on takes a little more time. The second reason is the integrated T-handle: the end piece of the pump can be pulled off and pushed across into the mount underneath. This makes pumping much more comfortable. Last but not least, we really liked the air piston - it was rather mid-range in terms of pumping volume (1,57 bar after 200 strokes), but it required a lot less force to pump than the competition.

The SKS Spaero Double Action is a really good hand pump. If you are not deterred by the rather large form factor and if you can live with the high price, you will get a reliable, strong and, in particular, easy-to-handle pump for trail hunting on your mountain bike.
